Do you know what a “sneakerhead” is? It is someone who collects, trades or admires sneakers. Did you know that Air Force One is not only the plane the president of the United States rides in but is also the name of the first Nike sneaker that sold for four figures? It was designed by Bruce Kilgore and was the first shoe to use Nike Air technology.
Have you ever heard of Jeremy Scott? He is a fashion designer and has designed a collection of footwear for Adidas. Some of his most popular designs are his wing high tops and teddy-bear shoes.
Not only are there shoe designers there are many artists who customize already existing shoes such as Dan Gamache of Mache Custom Kicks. He started his business when he couldn’t find sneaker designs that he liked, so he’s been in business ever since.
Most of the big sneaker companies offer customization and there are places like bucketfeet that allow you to buy artist-created sneakers. There are even paint and sip studios that specialize in painting shoes!
In Doodle Art & Design this week we took a plain, white high-top sneaker and made our own custom designs using scissors, colorful laces, markers and sticky foam.
